​Registration of death​

Deaths in Scotland must be registered within eight days of the death certificate being signed or BEFORE the funeral takes place. This can be done at any Registrars within Scotland.

To register a death

​You will require the Death Certificate, and if you have any of the following documents, it’s advisable to take them with you:​

  • Birth Certificate
  • Marriage Certificate (if applicable)
  • Medical Card

​In return you’ll receive:

  • A certificate of Registration of Death (Form 14) which MUST be returned to us immediately.
  • A certificate of Registration of Death (Form BD8) which you should complete and return to the DWP (you can call instead using the phone number on the form.)
  • Extracts of the Death Certificate can be obtained form the Registrar for a small fee. These are normally required by banks and insurance companies etc to tie up any financial affairs.
